Experiences of Devi Priya -2
As I said last week Devi is guided to perform various vratams as well as reminded of her vows through a series of dreams.
Many of us also get dreams, but by the time we get up we mostly forget the content and many a time the sequence too. Interestingly Devi’s dreams are so vivid and clear, she can recall most of them without losing the essence of it.
In one of the many dreams, she saw a lady with a big vermillion coming and sitting near to her. Someone from the behind was telling her that she was ‘Goddess Shyamala’.

In continuation of the dream the lady was sitting with her husband discussing about Devi saying that the good days are yet to come and that she has to perform some puja. But the husband was doubtful whether Devi would be able to perform the same.
Devi saw herself sitting outside the threshold of the couple’s room, eating morsels of prasadam which had fallen on the floor.
When Devi woke up she searched the net for the meaning. What she read surprised her.
Goddess Shyamala or Matangi would receive the offerings of leftover food. She carries a noose, sword, goad, and club, her other well-known form, Raja-Matangi, plays the veena and is often pictured with a parrot.

As per the scriptures Goddess Matangi originated from the morsels of food that fell down when Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were consuming the neivedyam.
Assuming that she was guided to do Matangi puja, Devi started worshipping Shyamala by reading Shyamala Dandakam and beeja Mantra of Lakshmi Devi.
One afternoon when putting her daughter to sleep, Devi put her daughter on her legs while she herself was lying down on the bed.
Suddenly she felt her body becoming light. Although her daughter was on her legs she could not feel the weight of the child.
She felt her soul rising from her body and her heart beating very fast. She immediately knew that Devi Maa was near her and immediately requested ‘Amma!!! I know you are near me and I can feel your presence. Please don’t scare me’.
Soon she felt her soul returning to her body and the weight of her child.
When she narrated her experience to her mother, she advised her to stop chanting Shyamala dandakam.

Shyamala Dandakam is very powerful mantra, which probably should be done under the guidance of a Guru.
Some of the mantras need the able guidance and deeksha from a Guru. Only then we would be able to withstand and absorb the power of the mantra as well as the divine energies.
Still Devi continued chanting the Shyamala Dandakam and many a time she felt the lightness of her body.
Taking the help of internet, Devi read about a similar experience of another person who was advised by his Guru to read Sumukhi Kavacham.

Hence Devi too followed the footsteps and started reciting the same. Sumukhi or Matangi Kavacham offers protection to the chanter.
In another of her dreams she saw an old colleague with whom she had lost contact long back. The lady was holding a book and looking at Devi. Not giving much importance to the dream she got up and after the daily routine went into the puja room. As soon as she opened the door a book from the nearby cupboard fell down. She saw it was about vratams and with a yantra in one of its pages. Trying hard to recollect where she had seen the yantra she completed her puja.

Suddenly she realised that she saw the same yantra in her dream in the book that the friend was holding. This book that fell down was gifted to her by a friend long back and Devi had kept it in the puja room.
The same book was now in her hands…
The book was…
Vaibhava Lakshmi Vratam.

Devi used to perform Santoshi Maa vratam and vowed not to eat sour food on all Fridays throughout her life.
Many years back, when doing her Udyapana (after completing the required number of weeks which the devotee wants to perform the vratam, we need to do the closing of the puja by doing Udyapana) she went to the temple.
An unknown lady approached her and gave her a laminated photo of Astalakshmi as well as the yantram. As we don’t say no if given with haldi kumkum, Devi too could not refuse and took both the picture and the yantra. Without realising the significance of the same she brought them home, covered in paper and left it in the attic of her puja room.

Now after so many years, recalling this incident she took out the yantra and the picture and decided to perform Vaibhava Lakshmi vratam for 9 weeks (it needs to be performed in the evening either on Thursday or Friday).
Whilst performing this vratam, on one morning she dreamt of a lady with big vermillion on forehead eating green rice from the plate in which they offer neivedyam.

In the evening when she was reciting the astotram her mother brought the neivedyam. Seeing it Devi was shocked…
For her mother cooked rice with green vegetables and leaves imparting green colour to the rice.
Devi had not discussed the dream with her mother at all.
Interestingly, when Devi was thinking what to offer for each week, the same lady used to come in her dream and show that she was eating Gulabjamun and seviyan.

It appears that Goddess Lakshmi loves Gulabjamun (net to the rescue for Devi).
For the 9th week, Devi wanted to offer something different and thinking about the same went to sleep. She found herself uttering some word in Malayalam which she was not even aware of till she woke up. It sounded something like ‘kozikai or kozikot’.
Not knowing what it meant, she searched the net and realised it was ‘kozhukattai’(Sweet Modak).

Devi says she does not know anything about Kerala or Tamilnadu and the least of all the states’ dishes.
When Devi Maa is indicating what She wants, could we ignore it???
Devi searched for the recipe and made the same as neivedyam for the last week of her vratam.
(In one of the previous episodes Devi was asked to prepare an Orissa sweet dish "PODI PITHA" as neivedyam (in a dream) which she never heard of till then)
