Importance and History behind the temple:
In 14th century there lived an ardent devotee of Lord Narasimha Swamy in Penukonda named Pedda Narasimha Reddy.
He used to work in the Penukonda Kingdom. All his fathers and forefathers worshipped Sri Ahobila Narasimha Swamy from many ages.
Narasimha Reddy too had immense faith on Lord Narasimha Swamy. His past 14 generations had a strong wish to visit Sri Ahobila Narasimha swamy (which is located in Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh) and offer valuables from their earnings in their lives. But none of them were able to visit Ahobilam temple due to difficulties in reaching the place even though when they tried to visit many a time.
In those days, there were no proper roads and transportation to reach Ahobilam from Penukonda.
The journey was not easy as one has to cross the dense forests for many days and nights to reach Ahobilam.
Pedda Narasimha Reddy's father told him that only he had a chance from all their 14 generations to visit Ahobilam. He requested him to offer all the valuables that were safely stored from many years in the name of Narasimha Swamy.
Finally, Pedda Narasimha Reddy took a month’s permission from Penukonda King to visit Ahobilam with family.
One fine day he started his journey along with his family to Ahobilam.
Lord Narasimha Swamy had some other grand plans for their family. During the journey, they missed the route and instead of going towards North they traveled towards South. Throughout the day they would continue the journey and in the nights they would rest at some convenient place .
One night they reached a village named Puleru and decided to break their journey. While he was sleeping, Lord Narasimha Swamy appeared in his dream and blessed him saying that "I am very happy with your devotion towards me and there is no need for your family to come Ahobilam. Instead you all can get my darshan at a nearby place called Madhugiri at Somagatta. I am residing there under a huge stone inside a cave. This place is very dear to me as Shaandilya Maha Rishi did penance for a long time".
Pedda Narasimha Reddy felt very happy that Lord Narasimha Swamy blessed him with His Darshan him in the dream and for letting him know about the significance of Madhugiri temple. He told about his dream to his family and all the family felt very happy.
They enquired about Madhugiri and finally reached Somagatta. However after reaching there they were unable to find Madhugiri hill.
The whole family prayed Ahobileshwara to show the route for Madhugiri.
Pleased with their devotion Lord Narasimha showed them the route to Madhugiri. There was a cave under a big stone. Once they entered the cave the family astonished to see Lord Narasimha Swamy along with his consorts Sreedevi and Bhoodevi (both are considered as Ubhayanancharis).
Madhu (means honey) was dripping from the roof of the cave over the three idols that time. One can imagine the family member’s ecstasy seeing their favorite Bhagawan.
Although they started their journey with the intention of visiting Abhobilam, Ahobileswara Swamy blessed to visit Madhugiri. From then this place is called as "Sri Ahobila Abhaya Madhugiri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Devasthanam".
Within few days Pedda Narasimha Reddy constructed a Kalyana Mandapam (Marriage hall) and appointed priests to care of the daily pooja and other rituals.
He planned for constructing a Gopuram on the top of the huge stone and arranged for all the required materials for building it. But there was no proper way to go on to the top of the huge stone, so it was impossible to build the gopuram without a proper way to hill top.

Pedda Narasimha Reddy earnestly prayed saying “Swamy, I wished to build a gopuram to you on this huge stone and I have arranged all the required material but there is no way to reach the top of the stone hill. Oh Swamy! Please show me a way so that I can build a gopuram for you”.
When a devotee shows such devotion towards Lord, will He not answer their prayers???
That night around 4 AM in the morning Madhugiri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy gave darshan to Narasimha Reddy in a dream and said “I broke the stone towards North side for you to reach the top of the stone. Now you can start building the gopuram from today”.
Reddy woke up from sleep chanting the name of Lord Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy.
In the morning, devotees from neighboring villages thronged in huge numbers, surprised and exclaiming loudly that stone broke giving way to reach to the top.
Lord Himself broke the stone for fulfilling the wish of His dear devotee.
'
On seeing this miracle, Pedda Narasimha Reddy was very happy and thanked Lord for accepting his request. Immediately He started the Gopuram construction and completed in a few days.
As days passed the time had come for Pedda Narasimha Reddy to join back his work at Penukonda Kingdom. He handed over all the activities to be done daily at the temple to the priest there and reached Penukonda.
He explained everything in detail to the King He told him about Lord’s darshan and the activities at the temple. He also told him that he had
appointed priests to care of the daily pooja activities. Reddy requested the King to provide salary to the priests.
King was very happy to hear about Sri Madhugiri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy. In order to meet the daily pooja activities, priest wages and other events to be conducted at temple, King proclaimed that the entire lands under Kanirallapalli village would belong to Sri Madhugiri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple from then on.
This village is located between the Somagatta and the place where Shandilya Maha Rishi did penance for a long time.
Pedda Narasimha Reddy took over the chairmanship of the temple and undertook many development activities for many years.
His successors continued their service to Madhugiri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy.
Pedda Narasimha Reddy and his family had Lord Narasimha Swamy darshan along with His Consorts here in the year 1405 A.D.
Till today the dhoopa deepa naivedya to Madhugiri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy happens in a grand scale.
